5R55E seals
5R55E seals
I've been all over YouTube looking for how difficult it is to replace the front seal (input shaft).
I'm about to pull the trigger on a salvaged trans, but I'd like to change the seals on it as a precaution.
Regarding the front seal...Would I have to disassemble the whole front and take out the input shaft to remove the old and install the new?
Is it as simple as a seal puller and a little tapping? Looking at the input shaft, I'm skeptical.
I'm not too confident about the existing seals as this unit may have been sitting a while (possibly without the TC) and the rubber may have hardened.
Thanx!

Haven't done it but I have read that you should also replace bushing behind the seal, but that's IF it was leaking, i.e. fixing a leak, not just preventative maintenance
I would check out the seal to see if it is indeed dried out, new materials don't tend to "dry out" like older rubber seals did.
But yes you would just pull out the old one and put in the new one, no other work should be needed, oil/lube it before sliding in the torque converter for its 3 "clicks", of course

It's a junkyard trans. I really don't know how long it's been sitting out. I just wanted to take precautions as this would be my temp trans until I save enough for the rebuild/reman (with hard parts) trans and the thought of a little pink puddle on my driveway doesn't sit well with me.
Good to know about newer materials. I'll check them out when it gets here.
Yeah. I Fired away
Thanx for the reminder on "3 clicks"
