5r55e transmission issues

Hi guys I was working on my truck yesterday and noticed when I started it after I was done it was blowing white smoke and leaking from the exhaust. Then when I put it in reverse it made a loud thunk and wouldn't go. Other gears are ok. 99 4.0 4wd auto 140k miles all I did motor wise was spark plugs and new air filter. Please give me some ideas its my daily. Is it still driveable for a little while with no reverse?

You may just have a bad transmission modulator. exact symptoms of a bad one. Not expensive. If it is madulator change it soon because it is sucking trans fluid out. Yhat is what the white smoke is.
