5r55e transmission swap. Jasper Reman.

Hello All,
my 5r55e finally went out on fast deceleration at fwy off ramp. Loud crunching and no fwd drive. Works in reverse. 180k miles.

Our best transmission shop in Flagstaff (Flagstaff Transmission Specialists) quoted me $3300 for the jasper 5r55e and $1500 for labor etc. Keep in mind that my location is expensive cost of living. Remote mountain town with tourism.

They said they only use Jasper transmission and highly recommended it. Supposedly the Jasper is upgraded to improve issues with 5455e OEM transmission. Including servo bore bushing upgrade and valve body upgrade.

I go to see the consumer reports reviews of Jasper and the employee reviews and it appears that Jasper has very low respect.

However the transmission shop has great reviews and warranty their work for 12 months or 36k miles..

Anyone know about the Jasper 5r55e? Or can you recommend what reman transmission I should get. I can't rebuild because I don't have the facility and time.

This Forum has been good to me so thank you in advance for any assistance you can offer.

Brian

What is the warranty on the Jasper? The 1 year warranty from the shop only covers mistakes they make while replacing the transmission, like not flushing the lines to the cooler which may blow up your new transmission.

Jasper offers 3year 100k mile warranty. But I don't trust warranty statements.

$3,300 seems quite a high price for a rebuilt 5R55E, $2,200-$2,500 with 3 or 5 year warranty seems to be going rate

Are you sure the $3,300 wasn't the "installed" price

Never ordered an engine or trans from Jasper, so can say on the quality or if they honor warranties

Reviews are a pretty good indicator, but...................very very few write positive reviews, if it works they never bother, lol
I think Jasper sells ALOT of engines and transmissions, so grain of salt if most reviews are negative
But if they didn't honor a warranty thats a different story, no forgiveness on that

If total price is $3,300 + $1,500 = $4,800 then its costing you $133/month over the next 3 years to have a worry free transmission
Not much of a vehicle you can get for $133/month these days, lol

If you have a 4.0l SOHC engine change the tensioners, or you will be replacing the engine as well

Yes, Jasper pumps out a lot of products and works with service centers nationwide so a few bad reviews is reasonable. They also work a single technician on each product and do upgrade the OEM design.
I'm very easy on my truck so won't be putting a lot of torque on the transmission. Having the work done by my home town shop is a big plus. And it's turn key 3 days done. No crazy logistics. Most shops I call will not warranty their labor if you bring your own part. The transmission business is a total racket. Lots of people getting financially destroyed by treachery. Thx for your reply.

Friend of mine owns a shop and he sells lots of Jasper rebuilt engines and transmissions. They are ok, they offer a good warranty. If the shop recommends Jasper, than they are comfortable with dealing with Jasper and thats a big plus.

Price does seem quite high though. Even if you are in wonderful Flagstaff.

Price is high and the dollar is crap. I'm fairly sure they pay their crew well. This particular shop has by far the best ratings in town.. They are known for good CS and hospitality. We have a rich community here in Flagstaff and everything is priced accordingly. My options are limited and they know it. I'd like to meet a few ranger owners in Flagstaff.

I got my 5r55e rebuilt for $800 but i had to pull it and take it to this one shop where the owner who works on Ford tranmissions (spent most of his career working for Ford in tranmission repair) on the weekends while he manages his business during the week. I was pretty fortunate to get such a good deal. Not many folks are left who still work on this line of transmissions and the cores are running slim according to him.

Too bad you couldnt pull it and freight it over to him. But your core is probably shot.

Yes. I don't know if the core is shot but it crunched bad and halted then I forced it for about 100ft and have made it go crunch several times diagnosing it. Your guy sounds great. But I have limited time and can't do the swap. I'm definitely going to use a local shop. AAMCO just quoted me $3850 and the do the same upgrades as Jasper. Same warranty too. Thanks for your reply. I'm stoked you got a great deal.

Howzit fellow Arizonian. I have some experience with the 5r55e. Did a rebuild on mine going on 12 years ago (replaced bands, clutches and spacers). I have an 03 4x4 w/ 4.0L that I am likely going to have to pull the engine out of. That said, I saw good core 5r55e that came out of an 01 or 02 ranger (also a 5r55e) in Phoenix Craigslist for about $400 or so. Are you sure the trans is a goner? Did you drop the pan yet? If so, what did you find in there? You might want to drop the pan and see what's going on if you have time. Dropping the transmission and transfer case isn't that insane of a job. Heck, I just did mine to replace the rear main seal in the truck. Took me about three-four days of working 2-3 hours in my garage after work and I did it myself. I would recommend a trans-jack and floor jack. Both will make things a whole lot easier. Otherwise, if you have a 2 wheel drive, it's a pretty simple operation. I did at 50 yrs. old. If I can do it you can do it.

When these transmissions get rebuilt, do they solve the issues with the vulnerability of these auto transmissions in this generation Ranger. In other words, if these stock trannies tend to fail in the 150,000 miles range, are just as prone to fail around that same milage again, or are the weaknesses of these trannies fixed also?
Thanks, Robert

Are you asking about Jasper? Good question. I know that some wear and tear parts may get a revised design as that is all that is availble. So i would think in a sense you are getting some revised parts from when they first were built 20+ years ago. Not sure what percantage of known parts that are actually revised and replaced though...

Now your not going to get a rebuilt transmission with the best parts and tweaks like what Precision Transmission does. See their youtube videos concerning 4r and 5r series transmission rebuilds. They know the exact weaknesses and what to do to help make them stronger and last longer.

The guy near me that rebuilt mine did beef up mine somewhat within reason. Of course i only paid $800 and i know i never got any billet parts or high dollar friction plates.

Would you have preferred those parts or other selection options?

Don't know about their transmissions, but I had a local shop put a jasper engine in my 01 TJ over a year ago, and I have had absolutely 0 issues with it
