Attempting first Auto Rebuild (93' A4LD 2x4). Advice Wanted
Hi all!
I am going to attempt to rebuild an A4LD trans for the first time (and first ever transmission). I've heard that the A4LD is relatively simple in terms of auto transmissions. From what I understand it's one of those things that's not insanely difficult, but very complex. I was just looking for any advice yall could give me for doing the rebuild. Also, a reputable place for parts would be nice too! Are there any clearances I need to check and how would I go about it with basic shop tools (Calipers, etc). Any modification ideas or upgrades are also appreciated. Final question, does anyone know a good place to buy a master rebuild kit? I know that rebuilding an auto is an audacious undertaking, but I can't justify spending $2300 to rebuild a 30 year old trans (with the chance of it not being done correctly). Every trans. tech I've spoken to (in the Houma-Thibodaux area at least) has been hesitant to answer my questions and recommends to just find a junkyard trans for cheaper. Its a great little project truck that I'd like to get running, so any advice is greatly appreciated!

Well not overly complex for rebuild, the design of any automatic is complex because it has so many interdependent systems, but that part has been done, you are just replacing and checking parts
A4LD service manual here, save it to your computer so you can reference it and print off a few pages as needed: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...4LD_manual.pdf
A4LD, 4R55E/44E and 5R55E/44E are all the same transmissions, just different valve body in the 4R and 5R, but same valve body in 4R/5R
Most parts you get will say "for A4LD, 4R and 5R"
Always use a new motorcraft pump, always check the OD drum for "out of round", check or just replace the sprags(one-way clutches)
And of course change clutches and bands(soft parts), this is all transmission shops usually do, the soft parts, if that's all you do trans will fail in 12 to 18 months, just FYI
Take pictures as you do the tear down
Have a clean area when you remove the valve body, there are small springs and ***** that can fall out, you NEED them
The main rotating part of transmission is just stacks of parts that need to go on in a certain order, not rocket science, lol
Trust yourself, if it does look right it probably isn't
