Axle swap help

Ok I got this axle from a guy for $125, He said it was 8.8 with 4.10s from a 95 ranger with 70k. I drove three hours to pick it up and I found out it does not even have 4.10s in it, they are not installed yet. I still took it with the 4.10s. I know a mechanic that can help me install for a case of beer. MY question is, is this even an 8.8? The tag is not on it and it looks the same as my 7.5. Before I even bother cleaning it up I wanna make sure its right or Ill drive back there and get my money back. How else can I tell aside from the axle tag or looking at the truck what axle i have. Thanks guys.
Heres some crappy pics. Oh and look at the pinion, a few teeth are chipped, nothing major but is this ok?

yea and you DO NOT want any chipped teeth on the ring and pinion gears either.
