Bumb/clunk as I stop and take off from stop

New here. Nice site. I just inherited my dad's 98 4x4, auto tranny, extended cab Ranger. It's a great truck. Anyway, as I come to a complete stop, or as I take off from a complete stop, there is a slight bump feeling in the rear end. I know it's not the u-joints (dad had them checked), and it doesn't happen when you shift from park to reverse or to drive as u-joints tend to. I have 2000 super duty that had a very similar problem that turned out to be the axle spline being dry. I have twice lubed the spine on that truck in 100K and it fixes the problem for another 50-60k. To anyones knowledge is this a recurring issue on the Rangers? I hate to remove the rubber boot and try to clamp it back on if it's not the likely problem.

Thanks
Peter

yep grease the slip yoke. its pretty common on the ranger. I just used hose clamps to secure the rubber boot back on just put the screw deal on opposite sides of the drive shaft.

Thanks Bucky. That's pretty much what I figured.
