Busted transmission tailhousing... Causes?

Any idea what might cause the automatic transmission tail housing to break on my son's 1998 ranger. 2.5, 4 cylinder, 2wd. He just got it a week ago as a secondary vehicle, daily driver and as driving and it started shaking real bad. Upon checking it out I found the tail housing busted. I'll throw a new one on but hat issues should I look for that might cause this. Thanks

Welcome to the forum

Have the drive shaft balanced and change u-joints

With housing off put transmission in neutral and spin the output shaft to see if it spins "true" no wobble
On an automatic the output shaft is the "main shaft"
1998 2.5l Ranger will have a 4R44E automatic, but tail shaft housing from any year, 1995 - 2011 4R or 5R will work as replacement, engine model doesn't matter for this part
