CV Axle

How hard is it to replace the CV axles on 1999 Ford Ranger 4x4? What is needed? I have done a lot of work on cars before but have never changed out a CV axle. How long should it take me?

wheel off. unbolt unitbearing/hub from spindle(3 bolts 15mm socket). and i do believe it's just a nice little yank and they come right out.

now..i don't know if this is the "proper" way to remove them....hopefully somebody else will chime in.

That's not quite right for a '99 (above)

Here's what you do.

Remove tire/wheel.

Remove hub. To do this either use Fords special tool, or six small flat head screwdrivers. Pry up on the little tabs, at the same time (you'll figure it out) and pull it straight off.

Next remove the snap ring that holds the axle shaft into the bearing.

Then you will need to remove the upper ball joint and let the knuckle hang.

You can now grab the outer CV and remove it from the knuckle, then grab the inner and pop it out of the diff housing.

Reverse those directions to reinstall.

If you're good with tools you can knock it out in about a half and hour. I've got it down to a science now... lol
