Difference Between ID Tags on m5OD-R1HD
Alright so a while back I destroyed the trans in my 5 speed manual 03 4wd with the 4.0. The ID tag on the driver side of transmission that came in my truck says 1L54-HB. I finally found one on eBay for a good price and it said it had that tag number. Well it got here and the tag says 8L54-FA. I’ve been digging deep on any information on the possible differences between any of the tags on 01+ 4wd M5ODR1’s ( I believe there are three, 1L54-HB, 1L54-MA, and 8L54-FA) and can find nothing. Before I work on trying to send this back I was hoping somebody knew the differences if there is any and any problems I might come into trying to throw that one in. Tia
In the first set numbers L5 = Ranger or Mazda B-series, Ford started using L5 in 1999
1 = 2001
8 =2008
So 8L5 means trans was for/from a 2008 Ranger or Mazda B-series
The 4 is the Ford Division/Department that's responsible for this part, in this case "Vehicle Center 4"
The HB, FA or MA is what engine it was for and 2WD or 4x4 version but........................Ford never released a cross reference for these Suffix designations
The one you got is a 2008 M5OD-R1, that's the only 4WD manual trans Rangers used since 1993
Does it have the short tail shaft housing that bolts to a transfer case, if so this its a 4WD transmission, 1998 and up 4x4s only came with V6 engines, 3.0l or 4.0l
Check the bell housing bolt holes, are they the same as the 1L54?
Picture here of 3.0l and 4.0l bell housing bolt patterns, easy to see difference: https://www.therangerstation.com/wp-...ellhousing.jpg
The 2001-2011 4.0l bellhousing had an extra bolt hole, missing in this image, but would be at about 10:30
If so then it was from a 4.0l engine
So you can use it
You can use any 2001-2011 M5OD-R1 from a 4.0l 4x4 Ranger or Mazda B4000, any would be plug and play
If you are redoing the clutch then use a SAC(self adjusting) pressure plate, only a few dollars more, and much better to use these when slave is internal

8 =2008

The only differences in the M5OD-R1 from all the years (rebuilding standpoint) are the shifter, reverse gear, and 1st/2nd gear.
At one point reverse was upgraded to a lower tooth count gear (36 to 30? I believe)
When the transmission was changed from R1 to R1 HD, the shifter changed designs, and the 1st/2nd gears were made larger. In doing so, the synchronizer blocker rings were changed, with 1st being a larger single cone, and 2nd being a double cone style. They are much harder to find and much more expensive. The standard M5OD rebuild kit will have every part you'd need to completely rebuild the trans except the 1-2 synchro rings. If you only need bearings and not blockers, the kits are more or less interchangeable. If you need the new style 1-2 blocker rings be prepared to spend a few dollars.
Signed - the guy who bought the wrong M5OD-R1 rebuild kit and found these differences while it was in 10880843502983745 pieces on my bench, LOL
