I fixed a shifting issue on my truck a little while back. It was an odd solution, so I thought I would post the fix here. Hopefully it will help someone.
Problem: Basically, the truck would not shift into Park all the time. Going from Drive toward Park, it would hit Reverse, feel like it was shifting again, but stay in Reverse. Not just on the gear shift, but also at the transmission. I checked the two torx bolts behind the steering column. Those were nice and tight. At times it would shift into Park. But when it wouldn't, I would have to switch to Neutral, kill it, and use the parking brake. Then I would have to use Neutral to start the truck.
Solution: The shifting arm (before it reaches the Neutral Safety Switch) has a plastic piece that braces against a metal U bracket that is bolted to the truck. My problem was that one of the plastic clips on that shifter arm had slipped under that metal U bracket. See first two pics below.
To fix it, I simply pulled the plastic piece back and pried the clip up so that it was firm against the U bracket. (see third pics below) It was that easy. It has held firmly for several weeks now, but if it slips under again, I'll put a zip tie under the two clips to keep this one from sliding back down. The other clip on the other side of the plastic component (not visible in any of these pictures) was snug. It never slipped under the U bracket.
Could slip a piece of copper wire under the tabs and twist it just tight enough so the wire doesn't fall off to make sure the tabs stay sprung out and dont slip out as easy in the future. Yea id say thats not a super normal problem haha.
