Front Dif Question
Front Dif Question
I think I already know the answer to this, but here goes. I changed out my front pinioin seal last nite, because it got to the point where it was running oil out of it. I did everything right, and when I filled the case up, I put more than I was supposed to. ( I didnt figure it mattered) Well now this morning, under my truck is covered with oil, and I cant figure out where its coming from. Looks like oil coming out from the sides of the case where the CV's come out. Question is, will it overflow out of the front dif somehow?
if the front diff is over filled the CV seals will fail its common. those seals are easy to do if the diff is removed.
just 3 bolts to take the diff out. separate top ball joint from spindle. get the cv's out of the diff. then undo the driveshaft. usually can have it out in under 20 min easy

Well it depends how much you overfilled it. You really can't since it starts spilling out of the fill hole. If you got an extra quart in there then yes you will have a leaky mess.
after 500 miles itll be empty...might as well order a bearing kit when you order the outer axle seals which are a PITA to find somewhere that carries them. one of the local auto parts stores carries them now because of how many sets i have bought for the rangers i have worked on
Well.... It actually had ALOT more in than supposed to. I ran a tube from the fill hole, about 2 feet long to my bottle of oil, and the hose was big enough that if just fit in the whole and none ran out after it filled up. After I noticed, I took it out quickly and imediately put the plug on. If you get what I am saying. Ill take a picture of the puddle and post it later on...
Well... a little update. I crawled under my truck, and got to looking and found out that the breather had come loose from the dif. So its just been spraying oil everywhere. DOnt know how it happened, or why, but I sure hope thats all there was to it. lol
