If it's a 4.0L, it will have the 8.8" 28spline, if it's a Level 2, it will have the 8.8" 31spline. If it's a 3.0L with towing package or extended cab, it will have the 8.8" 28spline. Other than that, it's probably a 7.5"

I have a 99 3.0L ext cab ranger, but according to my code I have 7.5" 4.10C gears. So it is possible that yours could be a 7.5".

the 7.5 will be rounded on two sides, the 8.8 is flat on all 4 sides. I am referring to the diff cover.

I don't know the reason for what axle they put on what truck. I have a single cab 2003 3.0 edge with an 8.8 and a 2003 extra cab xlt 3.0 that has a 7.5.

It's a 4x4, so it most likely has an 8.8 ... but don't guess. Look up the axle code on your driver door jamb label or use one of the other methods in this article.
