Giving up on diff fill plug
Giving up on diff fill plug
As I've seen many other people complain on here, I stripped the fill plug and I don't have a way to weld on a nut to get it off. I just completely rebuild the rear end and all I have left to do is put gear oil into the differential. Instead of messing with the plug I was seeing if anyone could point me towards a website that sells a differential cover that includes the fill plug for a 7.5" 10 bolt that will fit on my 1992 Ford ranger. I've searched all over and can't find one (at least the websites don't specifically say it will fit and I don't want to chance it because they're pricey) Thanks for yalls time!
For anyone in the future, i spent about 3 days in advance while i was waiting for the parts to arrive in the mail (new gasket and fluids) going over the fill plug and cover bolts with liquid wrench. Each night i would soak the liquid wrench on the fill plug, and the next day i would go about my business and hit it again when i shut off the truck for the day. After 3 days of this, i used a wire brush to brush off the rust around the area (illinois truck), found my best fitting 3/8 socket wrench and lifted the truck up on the driver side about 6 inches to give me more room to work, and used one hand to press onto the BACKSIDE of the socket wrench so it wouldnt slip while simultaneously applying a firm but steady torque. My plug, even with the illinois cancer on every surface, started to rotate loose after 2 attempts. Just use my method and if it feels it may not go then take a break, grab some water and do some stretches. Hit it with another heavy dose of the Liquid Wrench and call it a day. Its better to wait another day and get it out than rush and destroy the plug. Good luck.
