Is this a good deal?

Well im looking to swap in a 8.8 for my 7.5. A junkyaard near me has a 8.8 with 4.10s, and a factory locker in it. It has 45,000 miles on it. At first he said $650 for it and I told him too much so He said $550. I was planning on showing up with cash but what is a fair deal on a axle like this. $550 still seems way high but how much value does that locker add? Thanks guys

well it doesn't have a locker in it.....don't try and argue.....it probably has a limited slip in it......NO Ranger or Explorer ever came factory with a locker.....

$550 is HIGH! i can get Explorer axles with 31 spline/disc brakes/LS all day long here for $200....

yea thats pricy especially with the factory limited slip where the clutch plates are probably worn to hell by now because that 45,000 miles he's saying is probably more like 85,000 miles...

So a factory locker was never a option for the ranger? I was pretty sure they did not offer one but wasn not sure. The guy must be smokin crack cuz he said it had a locker in it. I'm gonna offer him $250 tommorrow and see what he says. Maybe I should just keep my 7.5 and regear it. I have a 3" lift with 31s. You guys think it would hold up to these tires. Honestly I take it easy on my truck with occcasional offroading. Thanks again

the axle should be fine unless you are hard on it, as for the axle. i got my explorer axle with 60,000 on it, 4.10's, LS, Calipers, and rotors. for $256. So yea way to much.

hmmm, my axle purchases

03 ranger 31spline $300
97 explorer $100
91 explorer $50
92 explorer $50

so yeah, screw that price!

and i'd just run the 7.5 with 4.10 gears and a limited slip

Wow where you guys get all these good deals, I cant find crap except for this one. Ill se how low he will go and if not ill just keep the 7.5 and regear. By the way how hard is it to regear? And what will it set me back for 4.10s and LS?

Ya I detail at a dealership so I could get help regearing but I'd rather do it myself if I can. I like to learn while I work. MY only question is what do I need for a complete regear? I found the ring and pinion on summit, I am guessing I need a install kit too? Should I bother putting a LS in too or some locker? Thanks guys

I asked the guy about that and by "locker" He meant LS. He also said $550 was a good deal so I said screw that deal. I'm just gonna regear my axle. Should I get a locker put in too?
