How to tell if I have front wheel abs....

Im almost sure I dont but my front driver side pad came off so now the backing is digging a nice groove into my rotor so when i get around to changing my pads this weekend ill need new rotors. I have two options, one with ABS and one without... so i guess i could always check once i get the front torn apart but i would like to have a definite answer

thanks

Look on the inside of the steering knuckle.Do you see a wire leading down to it?

have you front tires ever locked up if youve had to slam on the brakes if theyve locked then you dont have ABS, if they didnt lock then you have ABS

You have a 99, they have no ABS in the front.

but its not a 99...

that is news to me that they had front ABS. From what i've learned slash seen, 98-00 had no front ABS.

And anyways, for the rotors, they'll have the tone rings that are for the ABS sensor...

My 98 had 4wheel ABS. Some only had rear wheel ABS.

The easiest way (imo) to tell is to look at the abs box under the hood and see how many lines are coming out of it.

I don't know the exact range, but in the late 90s-early 00s model years 4-wheel ABS was an option on some configurations and standard on others (4.0 AND 4x4 perhaps?). Somewhere around 02?, it became standard on all Rangers.

The first pic in this thread (RABS to 4 wheel ABS) at RPS is of the rear-only ABS module.

1989~1994: RABS (1-channel, 2-wheel, rear-only ABS) was standard factory equipment on all U.S. production Rangers.

1995~2000: 4WABS (3-channel, 4-wheel ABS) became available depending on option content. RABS continued to be standard.

2001~present: 4WABS + EBFD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) has been standard factory equipment. RABS discontinued.

Ha to get really nitpicky, its actually 3 wheel abs....each front has the ring on the cv shaft, but the rear has the sensor on the ring gear in the diff....so the 2 rear wheels will act as one unit (as far as abs goes). They will not be independently valved as there is not sensors on each rear hub. Just food for thought.

For 1995, the front brakes were revised, adopting two-piston brake calipers from the Ford Explorer; four-wheel anti-lock brakes were standardized on Rangers with 4-wheel drive and/or the 4.0L V6.[7]
