Icon9 Linkage?? Clutch?? WORSE???

Have a 97 Ranger XLT extended cab with 4.0 V6 and manual 5-speed transmission. Coming in to work this morning, coming around a curve, downshifted into 2nd gear and -- clutch goes straight to the floor, can't put the stick into any gear and a whining sound is coming from underneath the truck. I limp into the parking lot at work. I'm hoping that maybe the linkage broke; thinking that with what little I know about vehicles that I possibly burned up the clutch; praying to God Almighty that I don't need a new transmission. Would appreciate any thoughts, things to check, etc?
