Hey guys,
I haven't been on Ranger-Forums in literally years... but I'm having some trouble with my 2000 Ford Ranger 4.0L Automatic. So last night, I was trying to leave my school parking lot, but I had lost reverse - I didn't hear any clicks, bangs, or anything - and I'm pretty easy on the truck. Reverse is acting the same way as neutral. In fact, there is no click or sound of shifting between reverse and neutral. Park, Neutral, Drive, 1st, and 2nd are fine. From what I've been told, this sounds like a linkage problem. Unfortunately for me, I don't know anything about transmissions or how they make their connections to the rest of the truck. Can somebody point me in the right direction? I can't afford to have the transmission worked on right now...

Sound to me like a bad solenoid... probably something you can change yourself if you have some mechanical knowledge. You may have to pull the valve body out of the trans, Im not sure on your particular model, but still it shouldn't be too bad. Is everything else (forward gears) working correctly?

 

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely do some research on that. Yes, everything else works fine (going forward).

 

if everything else is working fine, does that help point it to the solenoid?
