M5R1 Mainshaft Differences

What are the differences between different 4x4 mainshafts in the M5R1? WIll they work in any '03 4x2 transmission for the 3.0L?

I'm going to convert my 4x2 M5R1 to 4x4. In my search for a new mainshaft, I was told that the design changed in 2001. Upon further research, it seems that the 4x4 M5R1 behind the 3.0L came in two varieties: F87A-DA ('98-'04) and 1L54-DA ('01-'07).

The mainshafts have two differnt part numbers:

F87Z-7113-AA for the F87A-DA

1L5Z-7113-AA for the 1L54-DA

Any idea as to the differences? Compatability?

Called a transmission specialist. Apparently ford made two versions of the 4x4 M5R1 in 2003. One with the tone ring for the OSS and one without. I'm guessing the one without would use the VSS on the output of the transfer case?

Does this ring a bell with anyone?
