'01 4.0 Edge 2wd Auto convert to 4x4

I am looking at buying an '01 Edge 4.0 Auto reg cab 2wd truck. I just bought a '00 3.0 Auto 4x4 reg cab truck with a cracked frame. Unfortunately, it has more rust than I had planned on and am looking into options if I were to by the Edge.

My question, will the 3.0 transmission + 4x4 drive train swap into the '01 Edge with 4.0? Or, must I completely remove the drive train and swap the package? I have a '00 2.5 5spd reg cab that could benefit from the 4.0 drive train if necessary....

If there are threads talking about this, please post the links. I didn't find a similar swap question with my search. Yes, i'very seen the threads explaining how to rebuild the auto transport to make it 4x4, but i'd like to avoid that if possible being that I have two complete trucks.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum

3.0l trans won't bolt to 4.0l engine, 2.5l also won't bolt to either 3.0l or 4.0l transmissions

You could swap engine/trans from one to the other.

Making a 2WD ranger into a 4WD ranger will make you get a "salvage/rebuilt title" for the finished vehicle, not sure about engine size change, depends on laws in your area.

But the 2001 2WD Edge frame and 2000 4WD frame are pretty much the same up front, both used torsion bar.
Non-Edge ranger model 2WDs have different suspension up front, coils
But still not a plug and play conversion even with same front suspension

I assume the 2001 Ranger is dirt cheap, bad body or wrecked?

In my opinion you would be better off restoring the 2000 3.0l frame or selling it as is and use the money saved on conversion to get what you want.

Ron, thanks for your reply. The '01 is 90k miles and needs a rear. Dirt cheap. '00 4×4 is a 95k strong running vehicle, rotted bed box, rad support, cracked frame.

If the 4.0 and 3.0 drive train are not compatible, then I might convert Edge to 4x4 and take the rest of the good from 4×4 truck to make 2.5L truck pretty and scrap the rest. Sale of 2.5L truck could pay for all.

Edge does not have proper wiring for 4x4. 2000 Ranger gets speedometer signal from rear axle, Edge gets it from the output shaft speed sensor on transmission. 2000 transmission may not have output shaft speed sensor on transmission. Edge also does not have the rearmost mounting bracket for the front differential. Front differential will swing back and forth on Edge and drivetrain will explode.

Do not bother converting Edge to 4x4 unless you know what you're doing. Edge 4x4 swap is not just easy plug and play swap.

Good to know. I understand the need for adding bracket for tcase mounting. I'm good to go for big mods, doing my research now.

I just bought the '01 Edge tonight. Real smooth and very happy I bought the truck! Seller said it needed a rear, but all it needs is trans mount or u-joint. Debating if it's worth it restoring the 00 4x4. Lots of rot and cracked frame. Basically a frame swap and radiator support replacement.
