I have come to realize that I need to replace the spider gears in my rear-end. It'll take a minimum of 2 days for the parts, and I don't have the time. I am going to get an entire rear at a junk yard, until I come accross an 8.8. What year ranger's can I use!!!!?????????????????

 

if you have an 8.8, you can use the carrier out of any 8.8 with 28 spline gears, which should be rangers, possibly crown vics and mustangs. the full size trucks and explorers use 31 splines i believe, but dont hold me to that.

 

I have a 7.5 I'm gonna take the whole rear out drum to drum. If I'm so lucky to find an fx4 or another with the 8.8 I'll be real happy, but right now I'm just looking for anything that will fit directly

 

Bit more of a problem but the first answer still applies: all the 7.5" rears have compatible parts. Also, 8.8 and 7.5 28 spline axle shafts are identical. If you need shafts they can come from either (though obviously you CAN'T use the 31 spline 8.8 shafts).

Don't think you can simply "upgrade" a 28 spline 8.8 rear by using the 31 spline spider gears and axle shafts either -- the 31 spline axles require a bigger outer bearing and won't fit inside the axle tubes of a 28 spline 8.8" rear. The 31 spline rear has an axle tube an 1/2" bigger in diameter than the 28 spline model.

 

OK nobody is getting what I am saying. I am gonna remove the entire complete rearend. I'm not gonna swap parts, I'm gonna change the entire thing. What years will work?

If you want to swap the axle straight in, any 8.8 from a Ford Ranger will work, regardless of year. You need to be more concerned with what model has an 8.8. If it has a 4.0 or 4wd it is most likely an 8.8. Your best bet is just to look at the tag on the cover, it will say "**** 88" or "**** 75" with the *'s being gear ratio.

Your question is a little confusing on what your plans are, but I think I got it.

 

Thank you, there's a 94 at the yard with an 8.8 and a 96 with a 7.5 just wanted to make sure either would bolt up.

 

If you have rear ABS make sure the donor axle has that also or you'll have no ABS system. Forgot to mention that, sorry.

 

if you stay with a 93 or newer axle it will be the same width as yours (the older ones are slightly narrower) and it will have the ABS ring gear and sensor in it. so anything from a 93-up ranger will bolt in.
