4x4 lights flashing, no lock up

ok, I have searched, and can't find my exact problem, so I am posting a new thread. I ahve a '97 Ranger 4x4 4.0l with warn lockout hubs. Used my 4hi about three months ago, no problem. I have a u-joint on the pass side going bad, but still can go straight w/o problems. Today, I locked the hubs, went to my fav mud hole and couldn't get the transfer case to lock. All I get are the 4hi and 4lo lights on the dash flashing. Checked fuses in the box and the power dist. box under the hood. Nothing bad.

Anybody else have this problem? HELP!

Flashing 4x4 lights indicate that a 4x4 trouble code is stored. Knowing that code will help narrow the scope of your problem.

It is available at the Data Link Connector but an ordinary OBDII reader cannot access it. That is because it is not stored in the PCM. A Ford dealer or a very well equipped independent shop would have the special reader needed to read the other modules.

And Earl is right. If you're a betting man, the most likely cause is the shift motor. But there are many other possibilities, too.

Well, I do have a snap on scan tool, and i plugged it in and it read the codes. None for the 4x4. So, I tried the smoke test, and lo and behold, it worked. Engaged, 4hi, 4lo and diengaged. So I put it on the rack and climbed underneath, and after a thorough inspection, figured on dirty connectors. Cleaned them all out, greased them up and put them back together. So far, so good.
