Long story short, my 97 4.0 was stolen from me and I finally got it back. I had to replace the steering column to get the key cylinder to fit as well as replace a few fuses and she started right up. I went to finally drive it after sitting for months but none of the gears will catch, no reverse, drive, 2 or 1.

I had my girlfriend run through all the gears while I was under it to see that the cable was okay and it was. Everything moves fine down into the neutral safety switch. I dropped the pan and replaced the filter and added about 3.25 quarts since 3 wasn't showing yet still nothing. I didn't see any out of the ordinary metal shavings on the magnet either.

The truck increases its RPM like it wants to shift but my poor girl isn't moving. Any ideas what to look for? I appreciate any advice!

 

Does Park hold truck from rolling?

Check the fluid level engine OFF
Then check fluid level engine ON, it should DROP quite a ways with Pump working

All automatics run on ATF Fluid pressure, not a Ford thing
Forward gears require minimum 110psi, Reverse 160psi, which is why reverse is often first place you notice a pressure issue

How many miles on the transmission now?

 

Park holds it in place. I'll check the fluid levels in the morning as it's dark where I'm at currently and report back. The transmission has only about 97,000 miles on it.

If it does happen to be the pump, how hard of a job is that? Would I need to drop the trans or is it accessible from the bottom?

Need to completely disassemble the transmission to change the pump, so trans would need to come out
