Not getting first gear...

Hey guys,

I drive a stock 98 2WD Auto 3L and I am having tranny problems.

First of all, when cold it doesn't want to get reverse or drive until it warms up.

Secondly, when I put it in drive nothing happens. If I sit there and wait for a few minutes it will eventually grab and begin to roll, but then when I apply throttle it just revs...and then clunks in and were on our way. It also shifts rough sometimes into second, but then I'm fine and it drives no problem. Third is still fine.

Even once driven, this is happening at every single stand still. Rolling start down a hill is fine though.

Fresh tranny fluid and filter, btw, but this problem began before I changed it. Was hoping for the easy fix, but to no avail.

I'm an amateur, btw. WTF? HELP!!!

Read through this older thread for one idea.

There was also another thread with pics regarding a cheap seal that goes bad , but I haven't found it yet.

sounds like something is misaligned in the tranny housing. reverse is not a mesh gear, generally a sliding gear and first is always in mesh. could be a bent/damaged shift collar or shift fork, since both first and second are controlled by the same shift fork collar. you could also have a miscommunication issue between the tranny ecm and the input it is getting from the engine ecm. lots of possibilities. remember, a auto tranny is just like a manual tranny, except fluids and computers control it for you. dont be afraid to drop it and poke around inside.

I had somewhat of the same problem with my '99 3L, with first not catching until i revved it up. It ended up being a valve body gasket being blown. If you would like to make sure that's not your problem all you have to do is drop the pan and look around the valve body with a light to see if part of the gasket is hanging out
