Posi/Limited Slip find....
Eh, limited slip differentials only work when there is traction available to both tires. Say for instance you are in sand, loose dirt, ice, or just make a tight turn unweighting the inside tire, in this situation where there is near zero traction available to one tire the differential is still going to send all or nearly all of the available torque to this tire. This effectively eliminates any good the limited slip is doing for you. They will work very well at transferring torque evenly if the available traction is near the same.
Anyway, why not look into an Aussie Locker. They run about $200-250, are easy to install, and have an unconditional lifetime warranty. And are a true locker that you will actually see a benefit from.

They only make them for the 31 spline axle so he would have to swap to that first.
i dont disagree that an LSD isnt as good offroad as a locker but its a ton better than an open diff. if you know how to do it (apply the right amount of brake pressure) you can get traction with an LSD with one tire off the ground. i have no issues at all with my auburn gear, ive never had a one tire fire with it, even around corners. if you really want to break the bank, save up for the auburn gear ECT (i think its the one im thinking of) its a selectable locker that acts as an LSD when not locked in. lol pricey though!
isnt an aussie locker the same as a powertrax or a loc-rite?
yea i was told that about breaking. if you got one tire off the ground then play with the break pedal and it will act like a locker or run the air pressure lower on the side that is on the ground. there are ways to make the lsd work like a locker
here is the cheapest place i have found for buying powertrax loc-rite or no-slip, both of which are avaliable for your axle

Yeah, but every time you are on a trail, and your rear tire comes off the ground, are you going to put it in park and run around, and let air pressure out of the tire?
Also usually you can't walk very well on the trails that cause one tire to come off the ground.
i just recently put the same l/s in my truck. got it brand new for like $230. i was kind of in the same boat as you. except i blew my rear end up and i wanted to upgrade with not much money. buy it. it makes a HUGE difference. iv not had power going to just one tire yet. i did some light wheeling in snow in 2wd with no problems. i was at a sandpit last weekend and both tires always spun. i was doing things that i used to need 4wd for.

Ok, we'll break it down a little more then. Your LSD should be a gear type, similar to the Torsen unit. Where as the Ford TracLoc is a clutch type. There gear type are far superior to the clutch type and work much better. But the vast majority of LSD's out there are clutch type, so the opinions lean more towards that type of unit.

For now. Give it a year or less of heavy offroad use, and it will be like an open diff.
The braking for traction applies more to the gear driven types of limited slips. It doesn't work that well for clutch based types.
Also, if you hard on the throttle in the sand while turning, all the weight (traction) is still put on the outside tire. The inside tire is going to spin much faster.
Aussie does NOT make a 28 spline 8.8 locker. Lock-rite does I believe. The design is almost the same, I think they are a little more expensive. Super easy to install though.
Edit...
Geeze, just looked and the lock-rite is about $100 more than the aussie. Time for a 31 spline 8.8! lol

i agree with the easy install, i think for someone who cant set there own backlash and gear mesh, a loc-right is the way to go if your looking for an inexpensive locker.
Yup, I said Auburn, and quoted you. And I was wrong, you are right it is a clutch type.
i just re-read my post, i kinda came of as a dick. didnt mean it that way, hope you didnt think i was trying to be a smart a**
On loose surfaces it will spin both since both since there is little traction on both tires. My truck will spin both if I punch it from a stop but if I try to do a donut on the street it will only spin one tire because it isn't strong enough to lock both up. But then again it is old.
the one im talking about is this one http://www.fordracingparts.com/parts...rtKeyField=221
