theres a huge difference.
he just didnt want to accept the fact that his truck needed a gear change, or wanted to pay someone to do it.

More gear...
I went from the stock 3.73's to 4.10's while still running 31's last year and could definitely feel the difference. However, shortly after changing the gears, I moved up to 33" x 11" ProComp Extreme M/T's and now wish that I had gone to 4.56's. It's not cheap to do both diff's (in my case anyway) so do it right the first time! I would go 4.56's - you'll still get decent mileage but have enough gear to make the truck scoot! Even with an Eaton M90 on top of my 4.0, I can't spin these big muds on asphalt... it digs pretty good offroad but not on the street. Just another opinion but from a "Been there - Done that" Ranger owner!

ok one more question...i have a 7.5 rearend and my trucks 2wd so i would only have to change one set, but would 4.56 gears fit in the carrier that i already have??? i once read a guy posting that he had to change the differential encasement to fit the new gears and was wondering if this would really be an issue

http://www.trsfabandoffroad.com/products/gears.htm (scroll down to Ford 7.5")
...shows four different manufacturers for the Ford 7.5" diff ranging from 3.73's to 5.13's. I'm not familiar with Yukon but the other three have been around for years. Pick one and do a search elsewhere for price comparisons. If they're made for the 7.5 I would think they'd fit without any changes. Watch and see if anyone else pipes in with an answer.

For the cost of changing gears going from 3.73 to 4.10 isnt worth it. And there really isnt a huge change with them. Your only stepping up 10% in gearing, which for the cost to change gears is a waste.

if the truck came with 3.73 and you go up 2 inches in tire size then you need to re-gear to at least 4.10. or should i say "should"
i ran 4.10's on 32's for a while, it sucked, the automatic was always hunting for overdrive. stock tire size was 235-75-15 (29" tire) stock gear was 4.10.
i changed to 4.56's last spring and also changed to 33's, at this point it is still not as good as stock, but its doable.
there is a noticeable difference, you may not notice, but your PCM will!

why would ford put 4.10's in trucks with 3.0's and 3.73's in trucks with 2.3's?

i have a 4.0L Auto on 33"s and running 4.56gears, can still pull 20mpg on the highway.
dont let people tell ya you will get crappy gas mileage with 4.56gears if they dont have them ha. the low end power is awesome! and still enough grunt to pass people on the highway. at freeway speeds im only 300rpm higher than i was factory with 3.55gears
go 4.56
