Shift points for automatics are in non-volatile memory, so will stay
Computer does need to re-learn IAC Valve voltage settings(idle) so idle may wander a bit, it won't stall or REV high, just wander as computer plays around to find best voltage to use
Depending on year of Ranger the computer can Learn drivers habits as far as acceleration needs, that takes quite a few days, i.e. if you like to accelerate fast computer may hold 1st to 2nd shift longer to keep RPMs higher so less of a bog between those wide Ratio gears
If its a 5R trans it may skip 2nd altogether once its learned MPG is not a factor, speed is, lol
But no, you are fine to unhook battery, nothing important will be lost
