Removing engine and transmission

Hi,

New here and to owning a B4000. I bought the truck for $400 recently after it sat for 3 years. It blew a head gasket 3 years ago and had only water in it instead of antifreeze for 3 winters. Needless to say I didn't even try working on the existing engine, it's a lost cause.

I tried to pull the engine this weekend and the bolts to the transmission are all siezed. I got 2 out, snapped 1 and think it would be best to just pull the engine and transmission as 1 piece to work on it outside the truck where I have room to heat all of the bolts.

Is there room to pull the engine and transmission (4x4) together from the engine bay? I've pulled the water pump and everything off the front of the engine to give me an much room as possible.

As far as I can tell the engine was out once and the bolts to the engine and transmission have loctite or something on them. The donor engine was very easy to disconnect from the 2wd transmission but the good truck is a pain.

Welcome to the forum

You probably could but there are only 5 bolts to drop transfer case and it will make it easier, without that weight on the backend of transmission

What year and engine/trans?

Just curious

It's a 2004 4.0 sohc 4x4. Not sure exactly what transmission it has but I'm assuming a 5 speed auto. I'll check out dropping the transfer case next time I'm working on it.

Thanks

Not sure what kind of hoist you are using

Automatic weighs about 300lbs
Manual weighs about 100lbs

Transfer case about 70lbs and 28" long

With an automatic you already have a lot of weight behind the engine so it does come up and out at an angle which is good, up to the point, then you need it to clear the rad support by lifting up the tail shaft, and that extra weight and the 28" matters then

You should probably start your own thread

Depends on your garage setup and assuming 2WD
You can pull engine and trans as one unit if your hoist can handle the weight and you have a few helpers, one on the lift, one under, and one guiding engine

But if you can jack up the Ranger then dropping the transmission first is the usual method and slide it out
Then do the engine

Remember that the ONLY thing holding down the front suspension is the weight of the engine, lol
So as you lift the engine up the whole front of vehicle will come up with it until springs are topped out, and your hoist might not be able to clear the body
You can chain the springs/suspension while engine is in so they can't come up as high
Or remove front tires and lower down the front to get the clearance, but if you need to roll the vehicle then not a great option

Then yes, pull out trans and transfer case first, then do the engine removal
