Replacing rear differential
Replacing rear differential
Apparently my 2002 differential needs replacement.
I just put in a new used drive shaft & that was about $800.
Now I’m getting quotes for over $2000 to put in a used differential…( the part is going to be $1700)!!
😱
oh yah, plus the axle housing will be another $975. (!)
I think that there’s even a $200 charge to get the part up island.
The differential is making some noise, but if it’s already kinda going, can I keep driving it until it’s really going? 😝
I don’t think I can afford all that.
The truck is in real nice shape dangit.

For a 2002 Ranger you can use a 1993 to 2009 Ranger or Mazda B-series rear axle, just need to match current ratio
You swap the whole 3rd member, it unbolts from the leaf springs, brake line/cables, shocks and driveshaft and out it comes
Use rear axles are not a big gamble, these were never an issues on Rangers, yours would be an exception to that
Yes, you can drive it all you want, until you can't, won't hurt anything else
Good site to look at here for used parts: https://www.car-part.com/
Part you want is "Rear Axle Assy(RWD)"
You can do Canada and use your Postal Code
Go here first to get your Axle Ratio Code from the sticker on the back edge of your drivers door: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...ag-door-codes/
9" or 10" brakes don't matter as you should get new brakes anyway
They go from $500-$750 Canadian $
They are not cheap to ship but can be shipped, call and ask they can look it up
