shifter stuck inside transmission! help!

Yesterday I started on replacing my clutch slave cylinder which is inside the transmission bell housing on this truck. I got as far as just needing to drop the tranny when it got dark outside, and decided to leave the rest of the work for today. Well I put the shifter back inside the transmission to keep the top opening covered for the night and now I can't pull the damn shifter out! I did move the transmission around a little yesterday so maybe its just in a bad position? I don't know, but I obviously can't drop the transmission with the shifter stuck inside it .

Is it in neutral ?
I think it has to be in neutral before it will lift out.

If your transmission was moved around and lowered the shifter could have been knocked out of neutral.

I would at least push the transmission back on to the engine and install one or two easy to access bolts back in finger tight then try and get the shifter back in neutral and try and remove the shifter then cover the hole with a rag and some tape.
