hard to shift

on my 98 ranger im having a problem with it now that i replaced the clutch and slave

when i come up a stop and im in neutral, i push in the clutch and it is very hard to get into any gear, especially first and second, like the clutch isnt disengaging all the way. sometimes if you count to 5 and try to put it in gear again, it will go, other times you have to force it. also, when this happens, you will take off in first, and it is really hard to shift into second. this problem gets worse after the truck has been driven a while, especially after a highway run.

the new clutch has a non-adjustable pressure plate, and the friction point on the pedal is about half way up if not higher

thanks

i know how you feel on the getting into gear part.
quite embarrasing too, cuz your sitting in a lot or at a stoplight looking like you dont know how to drive a stick, but really you just cant get your damn truck into gear.

id like to know whats up too.

My issues finally worked themselves out. I'm afraid this may be a faulty slave or master. You know I've gone through slaves and masters and trans like crazy from failure, but never has the hard to put in gear been caused by that trans at least in my case.

Whats the difference between a non-adj and an adjustable p-plate?

in 98 they started the adjustable pressure plate, the pressure plate turns on a tapered surface inside the belleville spring and moves it closer to the clutch, supposed to be a crappy idea but i didnt have these problems with it

Isn't it more like a 'self adjustable' p-plate then? Like when I got my first clutch to put in, told me to press down on the 'fingers' then slide the metal thingy where the springs are. I never did it and havn't done it either on my Spec that went in a few years back.

I've never adjusted them before install....and havn't had any issues. I've thrown two clutches in the truck, and once(er...twice) one got unbolted then bolted back on the flywheel.

When I had my clutch and slave replaced I now have this issue. Only in 1st gear. I just let up off the clutch all the way and then re-enage and its fine.

I notice that mine goes in cylces. It will go weeks without doing it and then it will do it like 3-4 times in 1 day.

I have the same problem in my 99. I have a relatively new (~2years) clutch and p plate and slave and master cylinder and i still have that prob....after enough troubleshooting and parts I gave up...and I don't think it needs bleeding either..

There is one symptom that I feel should say something, but not sure what yet... Say at a stop light and you can't get the shifter into first...if I let the clutch up a little bit, kinda about half way to engaged, then it will quickly pop into gear... I know its not the best thing for it, but I have never had it grind or stall that way so I do sometimes.... Some tranny guru must know what that is a sign of??

On my 93 it wouldnt go into gear sometimes.... I would bleed it and 2 days later no clutch. the slave was drawing in air but not leaking. So i replaced the clutch and slave and throw out bearing. Then no more problem... One of the guys at work used to be a ford tech and he said that the synchronizers would sometime bind up or somethin eventually if the problem goes untouched and then you get stuck in gear he said that the gear it liked to lock you into was 4th... Then you get a new tranny... Not sure if this helps.
