time to swap?

alright ive been wanting a 5speed now for some time and my od light comes on every now and then and i feel a clunk in the trans, i was told i need new u joints does that seem to fix this prob?

also if my trans is trashed would it be worth it to just swap a 5 speed in now? anyone have a price to compare a rebuild with a swap?

trans, ujoints, rear end backlash.....could all cause that clunk issue.

We need specs on your truck to give you an educated opinion on the swap. TrePaul86 has a project log of his auto to manual swap on his 01 4.0 4x4.

The A4LD was only in the 85 to 94 Rangers.

Don't swap. The manual tranny is crap. Or swap with me.

i wouldn't mind trading you at all :)

in all honesty though what is the difference in rebuilding and swapping?

and also what are the chances my trans needs rebuilt and isn't just something tiny like u joints, i'm in need of selling the truck anyways!

If the OD light is flashing then the tranny is going. It could also be something as simple as a solenoid going bad. When doing the swap you would have to deal with a bunch more crap than just swapping the tranny. https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...ad.php?t=82820

OP....

^^ It chronicals the auto to manual swap on a 2001 XLT 4x4 4.0 ^^

Yes..he had some issues...but you shouldn't have those(i'm talking the trans breaking and the tcase splitting)....those were caused by a faulty transmission.
