tranny chatter

kind of a general question, i got a 99 with 142k on it and the 5 speed attached to a 3.0. got a slight chatter hat gets louder the faster i go. very quiet chatter. with the clutch in or out, no matter in or out of gear. any suggestions? i got a center console out of a 98 elploder and the boot for the stick doesnt seal. so is it just tranny noise that is supposed to be there or somethin else

There's a seal plate screwed to the floor pan that fits snugly around the shifter stub and should keep a lot of the tranny noise out of the interior. Sometimes the plate will frag at higher miles and let in more noise. A body lift makes life tougher for that plate.

If the plate is OK, or even it's not, I'd check the trans fluid level right away. The M5ODR1's have a bad habit of spitting one or more of the three rubber plugs out of the upper cover and losing some fluid. Not a good thing.
