Tranny and O/D problems after going in mud

Hello everyone,

I am kind of in a huge problem, so any help would be greatly appreciate it. I went last night through a few off road trails with a bit of mud puddles (nothing huge) on the road. I drove through the trails, hit a few puddles pretty hard (big splashes) and after I took it on pavement for the drive home. It drove fine at first, I got it on the freeway to head back for an hour drive home. Notice a bit of lag on the transmission and sense that my RPM was revving high but going nowhere. I pulled over, turn the car off, turned it back on to get out of the unsafe freeway emergency zone, and it began driving just fine. Car was driving as when I barely got it, smooth. Well Im about 15mins from home, hit traffic, and as soon as that happens O/D light came on and the revving and transmission issue began to happen again. Now the car just sits. I checked the transmission fluid, and it smells burn and its dirty so I'll be changing that. But I doubt that would fix the problem? Oh and one last thing, when I got home, my reverse doesn't want to get the truck going backwards, and neutral pushes the car instead of just idling.

You can try changing the fluid & filter to see if you get lucky or take it somewhere & get it flushed but it sounds like you may have trashed it & will need to get some work done or get a rebuilt transmission.

sounds very familiar. mine has similar symptoms and I overheated mine in mud as well. Where you spinning the wheels a lot? I got a flush and new fluid and it lasted a bit longer, but it sounds like it's on it's way out. I'm taking mine in this week.

Definitely start with a flush and new fluid though. See how it is from there. Mine lasted another whole year. You can buy some time and start saving.

Pull a code and find out what that tells ya. I used to wheel the hell out of my ranger and it would see fresh/salt/brackish water and mud almost every weekend. I was careful of my vehicle and the height of the water/depth of the mud when I did wheel. I would change fluids every one to two months, if I went into water or mud that went above my breathers (trans, t-case and axle). In fact, I relocated most, if not all after spending $$$ the first year and a half that I had my rig. Yep, I'd say pull the code and prepare to drop the pan. Could be anything, from a faulty, failing shift solenoid, to a TCC Solenoid or TCC. The later while likely require you to do a rebuild. Hope you don't have to drop your trans. Not fun and not cheap. Aloha.

I would check the speed sensor on the top of the rear diff.remove the bolt and pull it out.clean it off.I would also check and clean all the elec plugs on the trans.I have manual trans and when that speed sensor was covered with metal dust it stoped a lot of things like my spedo for one.Its an easy check and its free.Good luck.
