Icon9 Tranny problems : manual shifting needed; any ideas?

Hello, I have a 99, 3.0, 4wd with automatic transmission w/ OD having some issues. It has 213k miles on it and still runs like a top till here recently. Lately when I stop somewhere the tranny acts funny.

I stop at a gas station, get some gas and get in and turn the beastie on. When I put it into drive to go, give it some gas to go, the RPM goes up and it barely creeps. I noticed I can manually shift into 1 to get him going and upshift to 2 and back into drive. It runs fine for a while and then decides to act up again once in a while. Sometimes it's when I stop to get gas and then at other times it's in a parking lot. It varies so much when it does this I'm unable to directly link it to a certain situation. So I can't tell for sure if It's linked to getting gas or a fuel system since it happens at other times as well.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm lost on this one, however, I think the torque converter could be to blame. Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated.

Mechanic told my friend the same thing for his Explorer. He ended up getting a new transmission.

Sounds like my Trans back in April it was the separator plate on the valve body.. its around $100 for the gasket/plate.

the gasket is supposed to be bonded to the plate and you can see all the rips in mine prob simular to yours. its supposedly a common problem

Seperator plate between the engine and the tranny? This may change things... no my O/D light isn't flashing however the check engine light is on. This is probably due to an unhappy O2 sensor behind my empty cats. Every time the codes are pulled it's the O2 sensor. I need to figure out how to trick the sensor into thinking the cats are still useful.

I had thought it was the torque converter going out.... Any thoughts on this?
