Tranny Q

Hey guys been a while Ive last been on, go a quick question....I got a 91 ranger 4x4, 4.0 ext cab with an auto tranny, can I swap in a manual tranny from a RWD truck? Does the tailstock come off it or am I dreaming?

4x4 and RWD have different tailshafts.

Does the tailstock not come off the RWD tranny then?

If by tailstock you mean extension housing, then yes it does. but swapping extension housings won't make a difference. a RWD tranny cannot be mated to a 4x4 truck, different lengths, shafts, etc. It is possible, but it certainly isn't a bolt in swap.

you pretty much need to tear down your entire trans to swap out the tailshaft if you switch extension housings. essentially, its the first thing to go into the transmission.
