trans fluid change
trans fluid change
I want to change the trans. fluid and filter in my 2002 ranger 3.0 automatic. I'm wondering how much fluid I will need by just dropping the pan and changing the filter. I know I need Mercon V fluid, also wondering about additives like lucas or others and if they actualy help or hurt in the long run. I'm hearing there are synthetic mercon 5 compatible, long life mercon 5 and others. I'm stumped on which fluid is best also. I have 150,000 mi now.
When I did this I just bought the 5-quart container of Genuine Motorcraft Mercon V. That was more than enough to fill it back up. Bonus- the remaining fluid you can use in your power steering pump.
I had a shudder in the trans a bit so I added in Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx. I don't like using additives but it did work.

pan drop and filter changes about 4 quarts depending how long you let it drip. I strongly recommend sticking with motorcraft fluid. Ford spent alot of time figuring out what fluid is best for their transmisions. I also dont believe in additives. My only advice is to install a drain plug in the pan while you have it off if you are capable. When I did my first filter change I changed the initial 4 quarts from the pan drop, then using the drain plug I installed, I drained and refilled 2 more times over about 500 miles putting in a total of 12 quarts. It was cheaper than a full trans flush and now i can change a few quarts every other oil change or so to keep things fresh without dropping the pan.
