4.0 v6 sohc 2wd 2001..MAIN PROBLEM = TRANSMISSION WONT SHIFT FROM 1ST TO SECOND ON ITS OWN...ok i was driving and noticed first gear was reving high....then my o/d light started flashing!!!....i can drive it i just have to let off the gas to shift from 1st to second and the rest of my trans works fine its just 1st wont shift unless i get it up to 3 grand or more and let off the gas...but their is absolutly no slipping or grinding

 

Rebuild time.

 

thats what im afraid of! i am hoping is a sensor or somthing but idk if their is anything it could be

 

pull the codes set in the transmission. but from your explanation its time for a replacement or rebuild

 

what are the chances its just a bad speed sensor.... i called a mechanic and he said their is a good chance thats all it is...... unfortunatly im at work so i cant check

 

Is your speedometer working? If your speed sensor in the rear end is bad your speedometer may not work either.

 

my speedo works which is why im not shure if that makes sense! i really dont have 2gs to spend on a transmission

 

If your speedometer is working,then your speed sensor(vss) is working fine. You're probably missing second gear. Like 04RangerDave said, you should see what codes you pull from the PCM. If the overdrive light is flashing, then you should have codes in the PCM. If the pcm knows it has a servere slippage in a certain gear, the pcm will skip that gear to prevent anymore damage. You are probably going to find incorrect//wrong gear ratio codes in your PCM. Time to rebuild or replace.

 

my trans isint slipping at all tho.....i guess the better term would be that its sticking in 1st then i let off of the gas and when i gas it again
its like nothing is wrong at all....thank you guys tho im gnna go get the codes ran and ill get back to you

 

is it shifting hard at all? does it move in DRIVE i have a video ill post to see if you have the symptoms i did right before i had a hole the size of softball in the bell housing.

nope! it does not act like that at all......thankfully....it is 100% normal other than when i put in in drive and id drives.i get to about 30mph.....3k rpms and it just wont shift it revs up and redlines at like 5500 rpm so logically i let off the gas and it shifts the rest of my trans is normal.....so now i put it in drive go up to about 3 grand let off the gas and it shifts....im on my way without a problem until i stop again....repeat the whole time i leave it in drive

 

it only does that from 1st to 2nd....just to clarify

exact same thing happened to mine. Rebuild time. I had water in my trans and it just about destroyed everything..

The reason you don't feel slipping is because its completely skipping the gear thats slipping. Most likely going straight from 1st to 3rd when you let off the gas. Have you tried shifting it manually? from 1st to 2nd to D.

 

its going into 2nd .........and when i shift manualy it dosent register at all unless its in drive 1st is 1st 2nd is also 1st but it shifts into 2nd in drive

 

definatly just changed the solenoid all fixed!!!!!! definatly not a rebuild

 

What solenoid did you replace?

 

Sorry to revive this but my 07 has been doing the same thing on not all the time. about 5-6 times in the past year I had to let off the gas and it would shift into 2nd.

Just had Ford look at it today and the found nothing wrong with the trans but said it was hard to shift and recommended "Transmission Range Sensor" replacement. Offered to do it for $185. I'll be looking to replace it myself.

I have a 03 Ranger and mine does something similar. But when it doesnt shift into 2nd I put it in Neutral while moving and give it some gas and throw it back down into drive and it shifts into 2nd. Any ideas?
