transmission hole question

under my 2002 4x4 5 speed today
on the bottom of the tranny just off center is an open hole about 1.5" x 3.0"
looks too perfect to have been cut open, I can see the pressure plate inside

does this seem right?
I am thinking of placing a piece of sheet metal over this hole by using construction adhesive.

can someone tell me should this hole be there? how would you cover it if it need to be
doesn't make sense to me to have an opening for dirt and snow to get into
thanks

I don't think mine ever had a rubber plug in it. I bought my Ranger new and I don't recall ever seeing a plug in it.

I think it's part #50 in this diagram. I'll try and go to the junk yard and see if I can pull one. If not, I'll just leave it as-is.
