Transmission issues

alright here's the low down. i have a 2000 ford ranger 3.0l 4x4 xlt. i''m not sure exactly what transmission it is. I think it's a 4r44e. anyways it started making a strange noise two days ago that sounded like the muffler rubbing on the driveshaft. i got up under it and didn't see anything abnormal, so i kept driving it. it started to make an even louder noise when i would drive up a hill or put a load on it the transmission would slip. i checked the rear end, and the pion seal was leaking. so i put more fliud in, and it kept making the noise. then i check the tranny fluid, since the pan appeared to be leaking slightly. it was a bit low. after putting some mercon v in it and some lucas oil stop slip it still made the same sounds and kept slipping. so my friend tol me that i may need to drive it a little first before it would stop. i drove it ten miles and it kept making the noise and kept slipping. i was going up a hill, and it started making the noise even worse and it was vibrating the whole truck real bad. i gave it more gas and it stopped moving and started making a whining noise. it would not move in any gear but reverse. i headr from a friend of mine that he had the same thing happen to him in his work truck and it was the torque converter. i've yet to drop the pan and have a look inside, since it's raining outside. Any ideas?

well the rain let up, so i just finished dropping the pan. there was no metal shaving/pieces to be found. only burnt tranny fluid. anybody ever ran into this? i'm starting to think it's the torque converter.
