Won't go into 4H
Won't go into 4H
Got a 1999 Ranger XL 3.0L flex 4wd with 5-speed
when I turn the **** to engage 4H all I hear is clicking and it won't go into 4H. Any thought on where I should start to trouble shoot. I have my 4lb hammer ready for some percussion calibration but that a last resort measure.

Welcome to the forum
Check Fuse #3 in ENGINE BAY fuse box, that powers the shift motor on the transfer case
Do the 4WD lights flash when you hear the "clicking"?
If so then switch and GEM(4x4 controller) are OK, but shift motor is not turning
The "clicking" is the Dual Relay box located behind the GEM module, which is behind the Radio in a 1999 Ranger
Yes, you can tap on the shift motor with a hammer if you want, and it may start to work again
The biggest reason for the shift motor to stop working is lack of use, its brushes get dirty or stuck so motor's rotor never gets 12volts, tapping can free brushes up temporarily <<<temporarily

There is no 4wd flashing light. The kid I bought it of said it would go into 4wd then back out, but sometimes it would work fine.i hear the clicking from under the truck near the transfer case itself.
Then it may be a stripped gear in the shift motor housing, pull it off, plug it back in and try to shift it again with the switch on the dash
Look at the link above
Block a tire so vehicle can't roll away
Then use pliers/vise grips to shift transfer case, to make sure shift rod is not stuck

Transfer leaks
Ok. Here's where I am. The transfer case works. Just started to work. Who knows. I did cut my damn hand on something. Maybe the truck wanted a blood sacrifice.
Now a its leaking. The leak is near the back end. The whole back end was coated. I hope the casing is not cracked. I did not see any leaks from the front of the TC or the middle gasket. If the electric motor gasket was bad, would cause the fluid leak over the back end?
I think there maybe a leak outof the rear output shaft. There are other leaks i have to address. Such as oil pan gasket and rear main. Fun. Huh?
