driver side wheel well

i have a 2006 fx4 level II and i noticed in the driver side wheel well the plastic peice is missing. I took in to the dealer they told me it doesnt come with one. I was just wondering why or if thats even true because the passenger side has the plastic peice???

has to do with cooling the engine and heat

you can add one by finding an 01-03 ranger it will have the rubber piece. Ford decided they didnt need it from 04+

I've often wondered the same thing because mine has been missing since the first time I paid attention to it after leaving Ford's lot. Never got around to asking though...

My 08 didn't have one either but it does now. I installed a passenger side one on the drivers side. It has not been hot since I did but I really don't expect any cooling issues.

Picked it up from a dealer for $22.

If you order an 03 part, Ford will sell you a very short one that is as useless as nothing at all. If you want a full length shield for the driver side, order one for the passenger side (F87Z-16102-AA) and reverse the push pins (very easy). It will fit perfectly on the driver side just like the one that came on earlier Rangers. I now have the PS shields on both sides of my 2003.

Take them off, swap left for right and install them on the inside of the plastic fenders instead of the outside. You will gain extra clearance and the tires and mud won't be as likely to pull them off while wheeling. Because of the contour of the plastic fender, you will probably need to repunch the rear two holes to get them to line up on the inside.

Probably wouldn't hurt much in a dry climate. If you wheel in muddy conditions, removing the splash shields will trash the engine compartment.
