My buddy wants to darken his tail lights, at first he was gonna spend $90 on some covers until i told him about nightshade.. now he wants me to put it on for him..


How hard is it(prep)? what are the tricks? as well as any tips would be handy.

 

Sand them up first and use VERY VERY light coats. I have a can at my house wish I would have know I would have sent it to you.

 

Yup, just wash the lenses off with soap and water, dry them and then do very light even coats until you get he desired darkness.

The paint runs very easily and can also get the 'fish eye' effect if the lenses are not completely clean. If it starts looking all spotty, clean the paint off with lacquer thinner and wash them in soap and water again and try painting again.

You don't really have to sand the lenses, but if you do, use 1500-2000 grit sandpaper and WETSAND them.

After you're done painting, wetsand the, with 1500-2000 grit or spray some clearcoat on them. If you don't, the rough texture of the paint actually attracts dust and dirt and the lenses get dirty quickly.

 

You don't have to sand them first, I've never heard of that. Make sure their clean, spray on a couple light coats. Wetsand with 2000 grit, spray on some coats of clear, wetsand again and polish.

I have a can of Duplicolor Metalcast Black chrome that will do the same job. However by the time you pay for it and I ship it to you, it'll be cheaper and quicker for you to buy a can at the store lol.

That looks 'dull' compared to Niteshade IMO

 

How dose it look when you do your corners

 

Yeah it is kind of dull, but then I don't like the dark glossy look of Niteshades. I just wanted a light 'smoke' look, which is the effect I got out of this paint.

I actually used this paint as a trial, since I couldn't find Niteshades in any local stores. After using the red paint in the past to red out some lenses, I was curious to see how the Black Chrome would look. I figured it would work like Niteshades and I was impressed with it.

The paint comes in several colours, like blue,green,purple,amber etc. The red is excellent for redding out amber lenses, such as this:

Just smoked the clear part. Left the amber reflector unsmoked.

 

Wow that does come out really really good, that looks like red plastic.

You asked what a corner light looks like smoked. I provided. How else can I be of service? Amber reflectors look like garbage when they are tinted.

And yeah Trent, that red paint is awesome. On the lens where it is entire red, I painted both the amber and red section to give it a nice even coat and make sure the colour was the same.

I am actually thinking of redoing the tails on my truck all red, and keeping the reverse light, and then smoke them again once redded out.

I wet sanded mine first and they came out great.

was done with niteshade, sanded with 1000 grit no problems with fisheye or anything else. I only reccomend sanding with that low of a grit if you plan on blackouts though, look closely at the bumper, those are also red lenses that i painted.

late, but i used simple green and a green scotchbrite pad just to dull the surface.

 

i didnt sand mine, just cleaned them up with soap and water and hit it with alot of really thin coats

Darker than I like to see them,but man do they ever look bad *** on your truck.

 

I tried the Duplicolor Metalcast Black chrome that crazymikey used and turned out absoutley terrible. Luckily i was able to clean up the lights and bought a can of Niteshade and clear coat and fixed em up.
