Old Tailgate on a New Truck

I was wondering if an older tailgate like off an 83 to 88 ranger would work on the newer style... like 93 to current... I think it'd be cool to rock the old gate every now and again lol

Shane's gate doesn't fit on my truck so somewhere between the 01, 04, and 06 re-styles the mounting bracket for the gate was changed slightly... easily modified but needs to be modified none the less.

My gate fits his truck... his gate doesn't fit mine. The gate has the "U" shaped piece that allows it to pop in an out... well the male part of that is longer on my truck than it is on his. Everything else fits fine.

in the parking lot of the bar the day i hung up my tailgate, i was curious to see if my tailgate would fit the newer ranger and quickly swapped them to see if they would fit just for future reference
it was a quick 5 min thing and i didn't even think to get a picture
but i can assure you it fits

Maybe it's just a GO anomaly.

i tried it with my '88 'gate on my '93 and mine wouldnt work, gate was a little too wide to fit in the bracket at the bottom. i was going to use it for winter as my '93 gate is getting too much salt exposure in the winter. dont know why some work and some dont, but mine didnt, that much i know.

When I had my '99 I had plans to fix the gate (it had the trademark dent in the upper right region), shave the emblems, and get a big F-O-R-D decal for it. I didn't want the workt to be all authentic but love the idea!!

Replacement tailgate interchangeable years?

I just bought my truck and it had a utility camper shell on it with the full double doors.
I didn't like the shell, so I sold it and now I need to find a tailgate with all the hardware to install it.
I have a 2004 Ranger 6' bed .

I was wondering what years would fit and are interchangeable .
When looking for one in a junk yard or buying one online what parts / mounting hardware do I need to look for and buy?

Here's what it looks like:

Ron you are missing all the required brackets & cables to put a tailgate on.

My 02 would be to go boneyardin & find a 93-08 Ranger with all you need, take pics with your phone of how it mounts, take Ziplock bags with ya, and get everythin all at once. Shouldn't cost more than $15-20 for everythin.

Lot easier than tryin to get it piece by piece at different sources.

GL!

Thanks 94Ranger355.
I guess that's about the only thing I can do. I imagine a can of WD40 might be a good idea to take along with me just in case of stubborn fasteners.
I would also have to find a tailgate.

The fasteners will be TORX, so make sure you have a set of 3/8ths torx sockets. Something else to be mindful of. If you have a stepside bed, get the tailgate from a stepside truck. If you have a styleside, make sure you get the tailgate from a styleside. The styleside is wider than the stepside and do not interchange.

The hardware though, I believe, is the same. Any 98 to '11 hardware/tailgate should work, provided you get the correct style (step/style side), possibly 93-97, but I can't confirm.

TheArcticWolf1911 , thank you.
I would have gone with my socket set and had to make a second trip, after a trip to buy a torx set, back to the junk yard.

These are very popular trucks down here in south Texas, especially white. So I should not have much of a problem actually locating one.

Thank you for giving me that tip.

Ron
