here's the pieces i had to add to get the length i wanted.

and the other piece, the little 2 inch piece wasnt flat and straight with the other piece. so i stood stood on the long piece and a BFH took care of it.

and the bottom part and the sides by the truck for a test fit

and here's what i got so far

had to cut a 1/2 inch off one end on each long piece.when i was putting the 2nd long piece on it i cut the 1/2 inch off and it still didnt fit, so i hacked another like 1/2-3/4 inches off. and it was a little tight on the truck, so i flipped it over and its good now.. i found a scrap piece of expanded metal in the shop so i leaned it against where it will go just to see what it will look like, wanted to grab a picture of it but the batteries in the camera died. boo.. maybe later tonight or tomorrow i will get some pics up of that..
the supplied music i was listening to while building today are curtesy of my cd player in the truck. haha.. there's also a couple of gaps i need to fill still.

well it was only about 5:30pm so i decided to go back outside and got the "what will be the inside" corner seams welded up.

i think im not going to use the stock hardware on this gate.. i will hook one end of the cable on the bed (like stock) and then just bolt the other end to the tail gate.. i will be welding on some 1" strips on the sides to hide the hinges and stuff to get a "cleaner" look. then make some pins for the top that goes into the stock holes on the sides.. haha if that makes sense.. i will grab a picture of it tomorrow to show you what im talking about.. it probably will be a while before the expanded metal gets put on, but i want to bolt my rear bumper up next.

thanks.. keep in mind that im not a professional fabricator or welder. but it is do-able.. the top of the gate will probably sit about 1/2-1 inch below the bedrails.

come on guys, modded tailgates are so ghey! all the cool kids are rocking stock gates or no gates at all...

seriously, 93xlt4x4... i like what you're shooting for here. its one of those hit or miss projects though, the slightest thing could make it look horrible. but if it turns out at all like plum crazy's, it'll look great. good luck with the build.

because from the pics he posted i couldnt figure out he did it... but since its welded already i can add material if i want to. OR i could still take a piece of 2x2 angle iron and "reverse" it on the sides to fill the gap.. damn thing is heavy enough as it is..

ya thats the look im going for, hopefully i can get it close.. i see what your saying though.. if its not done right it would look like ***. it wont be exactly like plum's because im putting my "spin" on it also to suit my needs.. i can tell you right now though this thing will see some abuse.

i know what he did i just dont know how to explain it. but you should flip your ends over so that it covers and is flat so you can mount the latches better.

plum take some more detailed pics of your gate. plz

mine will be the same as plum's, im just doing it a different way.. the ends are flat like plum's. im just gonna add a piece on the outside to make a "lip" to hide the latches.

ya i have that picture printed on paper in the shop for me to look at.. mine is the same, but doesnt have the lip on the end yet. also mine is not gonna have the big latch either like his. you see where the end of the cable meets the latch?? im just going to drill a hole and run a bolt through. simple as that lol there's more of his pics in the thread "Tiregate Designs".

FX4wannabe01- ya no doubt lol it got a little "heated" in here!! lol

so got a question. the top of this tailgate is not level. i have some chunks of pipe cut for the bottom. but do i just line it up at the bottom and let the top go wherever?? and pray that its level?

its ok i figured it out..

so i got the bottom hinge things done.. i cut 2 pieces of pipe that fit over the "hinge" piece on the bed and tacked welded them onto the tailgate.. took me a couple tries, i welded the pipe too far up the gate and when you swing open the gate the bottom hit the bed. so i cut them off, cleaned up the gate and pipe and tacked them right at the bottom of the gate.. and its all good.. its not "completely" square, but when its open one end is 3/4 inch from the bed and the other is like 1/2 inch or something.. im not worried about it.. and the top is pretty level..

here's that

and here's the tailgate open. havent bolted on the cable yet.

the measurement between the end of the gate and the bed side is consistant. which is good.

im happy with the way it looks right now.. its going "as planned" haha lol
also, i cut a "slot" in the piece of pipe on the passenger side so it gets put on the same as a stock tailgate.. it swings freely.

havent done anything with the tail gate the last couple days because i;ve been helping the neighbours get/split firewood. just gotta drill a couple holes for one end of the cable on each side.

its also been cold the last few days, like -10ish C all day.. and no heat in the shop.
