Working on my mustang dash (part 2) and i was wondering what you guys think of the lower mount. here is what it looks like in the mustang.


and how it looks in the ranger:



i'm thinking of making a piece similar to that, and spot welding it to the trans tunnel. do you guys think it needs to be a solid piece like what comes factory in the mustang, or could it be made smaller/two pieces? i guess there really isn't any real reason to make it any different. either way, it will need to be covered when the carpet goes in.

I think you could do it either way. but I'd just make a cardboard template of the one thats in the Mustang, and make a bracket similar to that for ease of putting the dash in there.

But if your future plans include putting something in the middle there. I'd make it smaller so you could put other stuff on there.

 

How did you do it before when you put the other Mustang dash in?

 

i had a pair of 4" angle iron brackets just holding the back. they were tack welded to the floor....looked awful. hence why things are being redone. i wasn't in a rush, but didn't take my time doing things and cut a lot of corners. shouldn't really be anything going in the area under the dash, minus a plate to fill the hole over the shifter, then the floor shifter from the mustang. but that sits back just a little bit from dash.

i think i'm just going to make a solid plate. hoping to work on it tonight.

 

If nothing its going to go under there, then i'd stick with a solid plate. you can also use the reverse side of the plate to mount some electronics in the long run. Such as your airbag module and what not.

 

i sorta agree with alex. but could you replicate the design the mustang has but just raise it up more?

 

still need to trim them down some, but they are bolted in and cleco'd to the floor where i want them. i am aware of the gap between the dash and console. i need to drop the rear of the console down some, but it's sitting on the floor on one side. i'll trim it later when i have my actual console. if you look at the whole thing, the arm rest looks like it's angled down towards the front, so bringing the back down is needed. i found this when i did the original swap as well.




leaving them solid is going to be the way. they will give me a place to mount a trim panel to cover that whole area. no air bags in this truck, it was a 93. well, they are now present but not hooking any of them up.

 

Looks good man. Is there still a pass thru space in the back there?
I can't remember if those cars needed it for the floor vent or not.

yes, there is still room behind it. but i won't be using a stock heater box. the ranger box fits, but won't line up with any of the mustang duct work, nor even come close. the mustang box won't fit.... going to go aftermarket, more than likely vintage air. it should all be contained under the dash. will fill all the holes in the firewall, with the exception of four lines, two for the heater core and two for the a/c lines in.
