5.4L swap or supercharge my 4.0 sohc?

I have access to a 5.4l dohc engine out a 1997 expedition.. Over 200k kms on the engine and tranny but its still an option. What would be the benefits of this engine swapped in instead of supercharging? There can't be too much more of a power gain if at all.. Also, I'd need the tranny too out the expedition right? And what else would I need? Cost factor for install? I'm very new to this just looking to see what the best route is.. Supercharge my 4.0 is probably the best bet, and cheaper? And is it bolt on?

Pros and cons of each? And those who have supercharged theirs how do you like the power gain? Will my stock parts all hold up with the sc kit or what else would I need to buy? I already have a pretty heavy modified engine in it now.. Help would be great! I'd search but I'm on my blackberry so its hard.. Thx guys!

I dont think a 5.4 dohc will fit there really wide. Why not swap a 5.0?

Stick with the supercharger. For one 04 and up are more of a PITA to swap anything into. The other reason is because you would have to seriously hack up that truck to make it fit.

the supercharger would be alot easier, plus unless your current motor is hurt, why swap in a higher milage 5.4?

Yea that's the way I see it too. I'd rather keep my 55k km factory engine and supercharge it, would be a lot easier. If I did charge it, will all my stock engine components hold up?

I vote supercharge then you can still use some of your other mods and not have to hack up the truck. Might be able to make you a decent deal on install to if your interested. Tho with that said i dont think its worth it for the money unless you wanna do a good motor internally.
I need to get that skid plate off of you to some day

Well Ive have/had both. So I should be able to answer this.

First off that isnt a DOHC, no expeditions had DOHC 5.4L engines that I am aware of. So its a SOHC worth not that much. It will have torque but that is about it.

As for the supercharger. I supercharged my 4.0L at around 90k miles. I had 37s at the time and 5.13 gears. I ran it HARD for a good 20k miles and the engine/trans/tcase stuff was all fine in every aspect.

The explorer express kit is 100% bolt on and fairly easy to do. You cant run your UD pulleys and a supercharger though. Just an FYI. Its a stout system and a really good way to add 100hp to your ride. That is the way I would go.

It wouldnt be that much different than my 03. Run all aftermarket gauges, run the expedition harnesses and it will fire right up. you dont need pats, or any of that other stuff the 04 comes with just remove or disable it.

Thx zach. So your saying I'd need to throw my stock pulley back on and scrap the UD pulley? I'm not too familiar with the system I just know I need more power lol

Yes you cant run UD pulleys on a supercharger otherwise you will never get the full potental out of the supercharger. You would be spinning it slower.
