just noticed a pretty bad ping wen i accelerate, anyone have some good advice on wat to do to get rid of it? also i'm gettin a tuner soon, will that do anything?

 

The tuner should help for the fact that they bump the timing alittle, i think..

Try putting a higher octane gas for a couple of tanks.

 

when i had my ping in my 3.0 ranger. It never went away, after premium, after warranty work for ford. Just something to get used to.

 

Yup mine does it.......not as bad with the bigger tires but it was bad b4 them....

 

Sea Foam might do the trick if carbon buildup is the cause. Just be careful and be sure your neighbors won't get mad about the smoke. Also be sure to change the oil afterwards.

Had the same problem with the 5.0 in my f-150 never went away but was much less noticable with 93 instead of 87

 

No, bumping the timing (via a tuner, this is one of the main reasons a tuner makes power) will make the problem WORSE (i.e. DO NOT RE-PROGRAM YOUR COMPUTER UNTIL YOU HAVE FIXED YOUR PINGING PROBLEM!!!). This is a common problem with 3.0L's and is very easy to fix (for most). (Information about the following can be had by searching the forums, including rangerpowersports.com) Install some AutoLite 764 spark plugs (2 steps colder than stock), install a Duralast 180* thermostat (stock is 195*, this will cool the engine), use some Seafoam (best to use through brake booster vacuum line, through the oil [but don't rev!!!], and through the gas tank, this will cover all the bases), and then, if it applies to you (which I don't think it does for an '02 composite upper intake) do the Hot Water Bypass mod. You can get all of the materials for this at your local AutoZone. The plugs are like $6-8, the thermostat is $6 including the gasket, the Seafoam is $5, and the coupler for the HWBP mod is less than $2. So for about $20-25, I'm almost 100% certain you can get rid of your pinging. Many have had this problem, and many have fixed this problem. There is no reason to use anything other than 87-octane on a 3.0L...maybe if you're bad off you can use some 89, but hell you have an '02. The higher octane gas will help the problem because of it's increased anti-knock abilities, but it's merely a crutch and not the way to fix the problem. Pinging will kill a motor quicker than anything else. It's not something you just "get used to."

 

Pinging is something I got used to in three vehicles. My ranger pinged, my dodge spirit pinged, my old cavalier ping. I had to live with it. Im hoping the mustang doesnt. But who knows with my luck. If that is a legit solution, then it needs to be a sticky somewhere for everyone to read since its a common problem.

 

I don't know about this forum, because I don't frequent it very often, but this topic has been discussed NUMEROUS times over at RPS...and these solutions have worked for many 3.0L owners...

And may I ask why you just "lived" with the pinging in your other vehicles instead of fixing the problem? A motor doesn't ping without reason...and depending on its severity, it CAN and eventually WILL kill your motor...

 

I had a 1986 Chevy cavalier that i bought in 1996. I paid $1000 cash. It had many many problems including pinging. If I didnt run premium, the car would ping like crazy. So for the whole year and half I had that car, I ran premium. (Granted premium was like $1.19 a gallon then). It wasnt worth the repair and I put so much money in the air conditioning system that in the end I just got rid of it.

I had a 1995 Dodge Spirit that I bought in 1998. It ran great til it hit 70k miles. It started pinging. So I ran it with plus and it helped. However it got worse and worse and I took it to a repair shop and they cleaned the engine (think it was carbo cleaned or something). However it came back two months later and I just lived with it

In 2003 I bought my Ranger Tremor with the 3.0. I was hoping it would be ping free. Nope, at 7000 miles it started pinging. I tried premium, it still pinged. I put fuel cleaning additives. It didnt help. And with the price of premium at the time (1.89) theres no way id go that route. So I took it ford TWICE. The first time they carbo cleaned the engine and made an idle adjustment. Came right back. Then I took it in again and they retarted the timing to like 4 degrees or something. They had it for a week. And what happened again, it came right back. So from 7k to 33k before I traded it in in pinged bad. I just lived with it, ford couldnt fix it. So at 33k with other problems I traded the truck in.]

So thats how ive lived with pinging. No solutions for anything. I hope the mustang doesnt ping but with my luck and history it probably will. Sorry for the novel.

 

I've got 34k miles on mine and I haven't heard it pinging yet, maybe you just have bad luck...lol.
