Its raining here in "sunny" san diego and I get in my truck to find one small puddle on top of both of my amps...luckily its all enclosed. I am at work right now so I cant do anyhting about it. I have towels drapped across both of them. Its coming down in drops on both driver side and passenger side..I didnt have a pic of where exactly they were dripping from but I made the best representation I could...


Its not coming from the 2 back doors, its about 5-6 inches in dripping from the back against the window..you can get the idea from the pic..


what can I do to plug these damn holes!!?

 

get in the bed... un screw the 3rd brake light... add more CLOSED cell one sided stick foam.. reinstall 3rd brake light...

 

I had that happen to me not to long ago. I was told that I have to pull out the whole window, pull out everything and reseal it..

 

are you sure thats where its coming from?? Not the side doors maybe?

The third break light makes sense because its leaking in the same area on both sides

 

mine was leaking like that too except not as bad. took out third brake light cleaned all around and waxed the paint. reinstalled light (the gasket was ok) and leak stopped.

 

its 9999% usually the 3rd brake light it leaks in then follows this channel on eather side and leaks around the window...

yeah were not too far from each other...were getting hit pretty hard down here right now..its been non stop pouring for about 3-4 hours now..

 

this may sound like a dumb thing to ask but what is CLOSED cell one sided stick foam i want to try it and see if my truck stops leaking

 

normally known as weather gasket foam.. the cells are closed so water cant seep threw the foam...

 

what is the best kind to get so it doesn't leak again and where would be the best place to get it thanks

 

I used to have a 1995 ranger and the head liner would get wet right above and along the back window IT WAS NOT MY THIRD BRAKE LIGHT IN My CASE ! it was the WHOLE window seal paid 75 bucks at a window installer and they took out the window professionally striped off the old factory seal put on new profesional seal put window back in tightened down bolts on the side/top/bottom and no more leak. When they had it out I looked to make sure nothing was rusted from the roof ( seen similar threads about rust spots causing same thing) Now my 1996 head liner is getting damp when it rains or I go threw a car wash INFACT you can see the water stain when it dries, btw this comes out when you clean your head liner I cleaned mine recently and it went away almost 100 percent , so if you have a big nasty stain from not fixing this issues at least the liner will look good again once fixed.Also I popped off my head liner enough to look back in there and there was NO big nasty rust from roof or side pillars.I woulg imagine the third brake light could do this ALSO so you might as well try the easy stuff first! keep us informed of the CORRECT fix in your case!

 

When I first got my truck it was leaking out the back....third brake light was the culprit.

this comment is my fav... first off to get the rear window out is easier then most people thing if only people knew how easy. from the inside is easiest start working the rubber out of its grove and it just pops out and then push on the window and it will fall out.. seal just pops off really easy.. another thing these bolts he tighted down... LOL WHERE there is NO bolts that hold the rear window in.. yes your seal could have been bad, but BOLTS no lol..


there is a reason i put 999% in one of my comments, yes it can be the rear window its just not as COMMON... expecially on newer trucks the rear window seal is usually good. where as the third brake light if there just isnt enough foam on it, it can leak really good and BAD.. back in the www.generation-edge.com days when the 5th gens where newer it was a big problem the third brake lights...

 

oh ya it normally comes in a roll. ford dealer has it too but your gonna pay out the ***

BEFORE i took the 1995 and had it done by a pro , i TOOK the window out and in order to do this there are 4 or 5 STUDS on top and 4 or 5 STUDS on bottom and and two on each side with NUTS on them MORON!!! I tried running a small bead of clear silicone to SAVE money and it worked for about 2 months,then it leaked again,so i had it done by a specialty shop. i will take pics if i have to of the studs with NUTS on them , but i don't think i will have to since you are CLEARLY talking out of your ***!

And look here even the new rangers have STUDS that go threw cab and are held on by nuts

I asked for closed cell one sided stick foam at home depot and they were like wtf mate? then they said u mean weather foam..i just said I guess and it turns out that was it...I wish I could just get the replacement gasket

 

Before you guys go off on each other...


all extended cabs had rear windows with bolts, while regular cabs did not, untill about 98 or so, then all regular cabs AND extended cabs had windows with bolts


my years might be off, but i know for a fact older regular cabs didnt not have any bolts while newer ones did..

Also, my 01 regular cab had bolts and so did the 98 slider i installed in it

Had the same problem with my 98. I would agree, start with the third brake light first, then go on to the window seal. In my case, it was the window and I paid $140 at Ford. Guess I got double dipped on that one.

My wife owns a '98 ranger 4 banger. She has the same problem. I went and bought some "liquid weather stripping" from autozone. It will seal up the cracks around the windows until you can take out the glass and brake light and re seal everything with good weather stripping.
