$800 oil change

So I took my son's 97 Ranger in for an oil change, check the fluids and take the tires off of my Ranger and pu on his. I'll post pics on that in a couple of days.

I go to pick it up and I tell ask them about the coolant that looked a little odd, milky orange. When they rechecked it...doh! Trans cooler is shot. Transmission fluid leaking into the coolant, etc. Seeing it had 90K and original hoses we're replacing it all, radiator, hoses, etc.

That was bad...

Jim you should take it to a mechanic, not Midas, and see what he says.

Yeah, and im not sure about the older rangers, but i thought they had 2 seperate coolers, one for the radiator and one for the tranny....dont see how they can mix...unless its a 2 in 1 cooler...

Aaron - It actually was to a mechanic I've worked with for several years and trust. The mechanics at this shop are all on a salary wage, not commission. Since all of the hoses are original 90+ K miles, I am having them replaced at the same time, that is part of the higher cost.

Not sure about the seperate trans cooler post though. It is a 97.

Found this on the board about the trans cooler for my 97...

One of the best things you can do for your auto tranny is get the largest, aftermarket, stacked plate cooler you can fit behind your grille. The factory cooler is marginal at best, due to its being tied in with your radiator. Remember, with that set-up, if you overheat your engine, you will overheat your tranny. Heat is the biggest enemy of the automatic transmission. Change your fluid and filter every year, or every 12-15,000 miles if used hard. Use ONLY the fluid recommended by Ford. Only use synthetic fluid if it is required by Ford. With proper maint., these transmissions should last well over 100,000 miles. - Gloria Roozen
