'04 and '99 Parts Interchangability
'04 and '99 Parts Interchangability
Not sure where to put this so I'll stick it here and hope someone can answer.
I have a '99 extended cab, 3.0, auto with a bad motor and tranny. Just found a '04 extended cab, 4.0, auto, that has been rolled.
My question, can I take the engine and tranny from the 04 with all it's associated and necessary parts and put it into the '99.
Or better yet, can I take the cab and bed from the '99 and put it on the '04.
Thanks!

Body of the '99 on the '04 will work and the better of the two options, both are 3rd generation
Make sure '04 frame hasn't been tweaked, if you think it has or just to double check take it in for a 4-wheel alignment when its running again
Remember to swap VINs on cab dash and cab door sticker
keep the '04 dash and wiring so all plug-ins match
Swapping engine trans computer and engine wiring harness is doable just not as practical.
With body swap you still have a stock 2004 4.0l Ranger which is worth money
With engine swap you have a Frankenstein, '99 with 4.0l SOHC engine which wasn't available in '99 Ranger so not worth much to anyone but you.
Also getting parts in the future.............."Do I need a '99 or '04 part?"
'04 4.0l SOHC engines were the tail end of the timing change issue these engine were known for, so swap the two timing chain tensioner when you can.
Also check thermostat housing for leaks, you need to remove it to replace one tensioner so give it a good look, they cracked and leaked
